WHAT IS NATURAL HAIR?
Natural hair is the way our hair genetically grows out of our scalp without chemical alteration.
In the last few years, there has been an upsurge of black women leaving the relaxers behind and re-familiarizing themselves with their natural hair. Many of us are seeing our hair in its natural state for the first time in our lives due to the fact that our hair may have been relaxed as a little child. We’re now discovering our texture and curl pattern with awe and curiosity.
STRUGGLING WITH YOUR PATTERN
While some of us have delightfully embraced our emerging curls, some of us are struggling with our texture. I’ve heard many women with type 4 hair lamenting their disappointment at their hair texture. Some had imagined, when deciding to go natural, that their hair would have a looser pattern and silkier texture – much like their Youtube and Instagram hair idols. Faced with a tighter curl pattern and coarser and drier strands hair acceptance was a little hard to come by.
ACCEPTING WHAT YOU WERE BORN WITH
In my opinion, the easiest way to happiness, is self-acceptance. And if the same approach is adapted when dealing with our hair, we’d be happier curly girls.
No two heads of hair are the same. Each and every one of us is blessed with a unique blend of strands on our head. Learning what works for our hair by experimenting with different styles and products will help us on our natural journey.
Comparison is the thief of joy so do not compare your hair with anyone else’s. Look in the mirror and know that you are uniquely you and your hair won’t be like another’s. Embrace the magic that your DNA created on your head. Your hair is your crowning glory and it was gifted to you. Whatever your pattern is, know that it is beautiful!
